Malaga is a city of 550,000 inhabitants located in Andalusia in southern Spain. Built 8 centuries BC, it is one of Europe’s oldest cities. Its privileged climate makes it a major tourist destination.

Its geographical location gives it a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot, sunny summers and mild, rainy winters. It boasts some superb historic sites, museums including an annex of the Pompidou museum in Paris, a delicious gastronomy to be discovered in numerous restaurants, a lively nightlife and beaches and a sea that is just the right temperature.

We tell you everything you need to know about when to go to Malaga.

Best periods Malaga

Average air temperatures range from 17°C in January to 32°C in July. They can rise in summer when the terral, a local land wind, picks up. The sea temperature is between 16°C and 25°C.

It rarely rains, just a few days between November and January.

You can visit Malaga all year round: if you want to enjoy the beach, we recommend June to September.

The city is popular with tourists all year round, but the peak season is summer. To avoid the crowds, June and September are the best months to enjoy the sun, beaches and walks in the hinterland and nature parks.

Best times to visit Malaga and Andalusia

If you’re combining your holiday with a visit inland, avoid summer: temperatures inland reach record highs. At this time of year, it’s best to head for the coast, which is often cooler.

In spring and autumn, you can enjoy the Andalusian countryside, walking, sightseeing and hiking. The often mild temperatures mean that you can often go for a swim after a good day’s walking or sightseeing.

Apart from summer, the best months to visit Malaga are April to June and October. But mild winters are also a good time to explore the region, or even go skiing in the Sierra Nevada, a 1? hour drive from Granada.

Malaga: when to go

As you can see, there’s no single best time to go to Málaga – it all depends on what you want to do and when you plan to visit.

Each season offers its own possibilities: beaches and the coast in summer, renting a boat, visits to the region and hiking in spring and autumn (+ the beach!), skiing in the Sierra Nevada in winter… Now you know everything you need to know to decide when to go to Málaga.
